This 8-hour
personal guided tour combines sightseeing in the downtown of Sofia,
car-drive to a UNESCO site nested in the skirts of the Vitosha mountain, lunch in
a traditional folklore-style restaurant and a visit to the National History Museum.
Tour Highlights
- Our guide will come to pick you up from your hotel at the desired time. The first stop of this tour is
the UNESCO-listed Boyana Church, located in the beautiful hillside suburb of Boyana. The church is one of the few completely preserved
mediaeval monuments showing frescoes, mastered with realistic depiction and sophisticated use of
colors, putting it on a par with Italian artifacts of the early Renaissance.
- You may discuss your impressions of the Boyana Church over a cup of complimentary coffee/tea, served at 1300m altitude
in a nice cafe situated nearby the TV tower of Sofia, revealing a breathtaking view to the city.
There you may also review the free tourist guides and
informational materials presented by your guide. He/ she will
brief you on the main sites to be visited during the tour.
- Following is a visit to the National History Museum.
Situated in the imposing residence of the former Head of State during the communist period,
the Museum boasts more than 650,000 items of fine art, archaeology, ethnography, and history,
revealing the great cultural achievements of the
people inhabiting the Bulgarian lands over a period of about 6 thousand years.
- After this walk through the quintessence of the Bulgarian history, you
will have the opportunity to get acquainted with another part of the Bulgarian culture - the
delicious Bulgarian cuisine, served in traditional folklore-style restaurant.
- Following the lunch break is a 20-minute drive to the
downtown of Sofia, where you may see most of the
city's major tourist sights and landmarks, starting with the imposing
Alexander Nevski Memorial Church. Built in Neo-Byzantine style, it is one of the largest Eastern Orthodox cathedrals in the world, as well as one of Sofia's symbols and primary tourist attractions.
- Following is a visit to the Icon Gallery situated in the crypt of the Alexander Nevski Cathedral, which boasts a stunning collection of Bulgarian icons from the medieval period to the 19th century.
- After a short stroll through the near-by market for handcrafted gift items and souvenirs, we will visit the ancient Sveta Sofia Church, which actually gave the city its name.
- Next stop is the recently discovered, sensational Arena di Serdica - an ancient Roman gladiator's arena,
only 10 meters shorter on each side than the famous Coliseum in Rome! Unfortunately the site
is still partially open to the public, but definitely is worth seeing.
- Just around the corner is the former Party House, sharing one square with the Bulgarian National Bank, the impressive 15th century building of the Archeological Museum, and the Presidency.
- Few meters away, in the courtyard behind the Presidency, is the oldest surviving structure in the city - the red-brick
Rotunda Sveti Georgi. Built by the Romans in the 4th century, this building still serves its original purpose - a place for
Christian worship.
- In the last segment of the tour the driver will take you on a short panoramic drive and will see you off to your hotel.
