This 4-hour
guided walking tour in the downtown of Sofia will present you
most of the city's major tourist sights and landmarks, so make
sure you put on your hiking shoes, and don't forget your camera!
Tour Highlights (Morning Tour)
- The tour starts with a cup of complimentary morning coffee/tea in the garden in front of the National Theater,
where you may review the free tourist guides and informational
materials presented by your guide. He/ she will brief you on the
main sites to be visited during the tour.
- Following is a nice walk through the Main City Garden, past the National Art Gallery (the former palace), along the Natural History Museum to the Russian Church.
Built just before World War I to serve Sofia's Russian community, now it is one of the most vivacious places of worship in Sofia.
With its five golden domes and splendid mosaic decoration, it makes one of the "must-see" sights in Sofia.
- Walking along the Tsar Osvoboditel boulevard, beautifully
decorated with some of the best
architectural achievements from the beginning of the 20th century,
you will see the lavish buildings of the now-a-days Italian and
Austrian embassies, and will learn some interesting
particularities of the city life of that time.
- After spending few minutes around the impressive Monument to the "Tsar Osvoboditel" ("Tsar Liberator") in front of the National Assembly, we will part to the magnificent
building of the Sofia University.
- The tour continues through the garden of the National Art Academy, past the National Gallery of Foreign Art to the vast Alexander Nevski Square.
- Dominating the square and the surrounding space, is the imposing Alexander Nevski Memorial Church.
Built in Neo-Byzantine style, it is one of the largest Eastern Orthodox cathedrals in the world, as well as one of Sofia's symbols and primary tourist attractions.
- Following is a visit to the Icon Gallery situated in the crypt of the Alexander Nevski Cathedral, which boasts a stunning collection of Bulgarian icons from the medieval period to the 19th century.
- After a short stroll through the near-by market for handcrafted gift items and souvenirs, we will visit the ancient Sveta Sofia Church, which actually gave the city its name.
- Next stop is the recently discovered, sensational Arena di Serdica - an ancient Roman gladiator's arena,
only 10 meters shorter on each side than the famous Coliseum in Rome! Unfortunately the site
is still partially open to the public, but definitely is worth seeing.
- Just around the corner is the former Party House, sharing one square with the Bulgarian National Bank, the impressive 15th century building of the Archeological Museum, and the Presidency.
- There we may observe the changing of the guard, which takes place on the hour. The soldiers march, dressed in beautiful 19th century ceremonial uniforms and the whole ritual well worth watching.
- Few meters away, in the courtyard behind the Presidency, is the oldest surviving structure in the city - the red-brick
Rotunda Sveti Georgi. Built by the Romans in the 4th century, this building still serves its original purpose - a place for
Christian worship.
- Following is a short walk in the steps of the ancient Thracians, near the remains of the city walls of Serdica.
- Walking past the Central Universal Store (TSUM), we will head to the beautiful buildings of the Central Bath and Tsentralni Hali - the biggest indoor market in Sofia.
- The last segment of the tour is a 300-meters walk to the Monument to Sveta Sofia, where your guide will assist you in getting a cab, or will give you directions on how to reach your hotel.
